I-90 Connector Phase II

I-90 Land Use Study

NYS DOT I-90 Phase II

The I-90 connector has been in the planning stages for many years.  As of Feb. 2009, there is no definitive information on the start of this project.  In fact it appears that NYS DOT has removed all information pertaining to the project from their website.

Below is an excerpt from the site prior to it removal, it should provide those interested with some insight on the project.

I-90 Connector Phase II
(PIN 1089.62.121)
The following objectives (not intended to be in priority order) were established at the outset of the project's planning process:
  • Improve access, reduce travel time and forecasted traffic congestion to promote economic development in the Town of North Greenbush, City of Rensselaer, City of Troy, Town of East Greenbush, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Technical Park, Hudson Valley Community College, and other locations served by the Route 4 corridor;
  • Improve mobility and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users by linking residential neighborhoods and commercial activities in the Route 4 corridor;
  • Preserve the Route 4 corridor function (protecting the investment) through access management;
  • Support the land use management visions, goals and master plans of local communities in the Route 4 corridor; and
  • Establish an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) as part of the project. The ITS would include segments of I-787, I-90, Route 378, Route 4 and any new highway proposed as a project alternative.

In accordance with these objectives, the project is consistent with long-range land use and transportation planning in the Capital Region. Specifically:

  • can facilitate mixed-use development;
  • creates parallel links for alternative transportation;
  • enables the type of development for building quality communities that are environmentally sustainable; and
  • provides benefits to the Capital District Region as a whole.

Phase 1 of the Connector (I-90 Exit 8) was opened in 1996. Phase 2 would extend approximately three miles northward from Washington Avenue through Rensselaer Technology Park to a northern terminus at HVCC and possibly Williams Road.
